An interior scene depicting a priest visiting a woman and her children. A painting of the crucifixion hangs on the wall, signifying the piety of this humble family. Meanwhile, the priest's umbrella which leans against the bench adds a note of charming mundanity to the scene. Presented glazed in a distressed gilt frame and a gold mount. The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some foxing and discolouration. There are some scuffs, losses, and areas of restoration to the frame and some marks to the mount.

Artist Biography

Virgilio Colombo was an Italian painter of genre scenes, active in Milan in the 19th century. He participated in the Mostra Nazionale in Milan in 1886 with 'Merchant's Square'. He was also an art critic.
