A finely detailed engraving by Francesco Villamena (1566-1624) after a painting by Federico Barocci (1535-1612). The scene depicts Saint Jerome living as a hermit during his period of ascetic retreat in the Syrian desert. Illuminated by candlelight, he worships the crucifix and pays penance by beating his chest with a rock. The presence of the lion in the background, Jerome's traditional attribute, references the legend in which he removed a thorn from the beast's paw. Inscribed in Latin below the image. Well presented in a vintage black frame with a gilt lamb's tongue running pattern. On paper.
Condition
Discolouration and foxing to the paper, however the condition is good for a picture of this age overall. Marks and scuffs to the frame.
