A delightful mid-nineteenth-century portrait of a young boy, executed in a charming naïve style. The boy wears a dress—as was typical for young boys in the Victorian era—and is playing with a whip and spinning top. Dated and indistinctly signed in graphite to the lower right. Beautifully presented in a bird's-eye maple frame with a gold slip. On paper.

Signs of wear consistent with age including discolouration and light foxing to the paper. Marks and scuffs to the frame.
