Artist Biography
Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) was a Hungarian-French artist who is widely accepted as a grandfather of the Op art movement. Born in Pécs, Vasarely grew up in Piešťany and Budapest, where he studied medicine at Eötvös Loránd University. However, he abandoned medicine in 1927 to study traditional academic painting at the private Podolini-Volkmann Academy and then at Sándor Bortnyik's private art school called Műller. He moved to Paris in 1930, where he worked as a graphic artist for several advertising agencies. Over the next three decades, Vasarely developed his style of geometric abstract art. He is best known for his use of optical illusion in his art and sculpture, and he is considered to be the grandfather of the Op art, short for optical art, movement. His 1937 work 'Zebra' is considered by some to be one of the earliest examples of Op art. Vasarely opened his first dedicated museum with over 500 works in 1970, and another museum - the Foundation Vasarely - was inaugurated in 1976 by French president Georges Pompidou. His large kinematic object 'Georges Pompidou' was installed in the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1976. The original UK cover for David Bowie's second album 'David Bowie' (1969) features Vasarely's work in the background.
