Horst Antes was born on 28 October 1936 in Heppenheim, Germany, and is regarded as one of the pioneers of new figurative painting in postwar Germany. After completing his Abitur, he studied from 1957 to 1959 under the woodcutter HAP Grieshaber at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe. His talent was recognised early: in 1959 he received the art prize of the city of Hanover and the Pankofer prize at the German Youth Art prize, and his first solo exhibition followed in 1960 at the gallery "Der Spiegel" in Cologne. His early paintings moved between figuration and Art Informel, with Willem de Kooning as a key reference. Around 1960 he developed the motif that would define his career — the "Kopffüßler" (literally "Head-Footer"), a torso-less human form combining head and limbs, which he explored in countless variations across painting, sculpture and graphic work; by 1963 the figure was fully developed and central also to his sculpture, which he began that year. International recognition came quickly. He held the Villa Romana Prize in Florence (1962) and the Villa Massimo Prize in Rome (1962–1963), and participated in documenta 3 in Kassel in 1964. He led the painting class at the Karlsruhe Academy from 1965, becoming professor in 1967, and held a guest professorship at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in Berlin in 1968. He returned to teach at the Karlsruhe Akademie in 1984, continuing for another sixteen years, and received the Hans-Molfenter-Preis in 1989. Since 1990 Antes has lived and worked between Karlsruhe, Florence and Berlin. His output spans painting, graphic art and public sculpture, and his work is held in major German collections including the Kunsthalle Hamburg, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Nationalgalerie Berlin, as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
