Victor Gabriel Gilbert was born in Paris in 1847. He was a pupil of Victor Adam as an apprentice and late Charles Busson.
He was known for his figures and portraits of fashionable society as well as views of the streets of Paris. He capture market scenes, flower sellers and bustling boulevards to convey the business of Parisian life. Gilbert debuted at the Salon of 1873 with Les Apprêts du Diner (Preparing Dinner) and Avant le Bal (Before the Ball). He went on to regularly exhibit at the Salon des Artistes Français winning a silver medal in 1889 and in 1926 Gilbert was awarded the Léon Bonnard prize . He became a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur in 1897.
While spending time in Normandy, he turned his hand to landscapes and harbour scenes. He also executed decorative paintings for the Town Hall of Paris.
