Very Fine French School Original 19th Century Oil. A very finely detailed 19th century French Revolution oil of figures gathered for the funeral of someone prominent, although we have not been able to identify who this is. The date '1830' can be seen on the grey plaque on the left side, and again on the dark brown cross on the right side. Unsigned. On board. Some areas of yellowing typical for a picture of this age. Small areas of paint loss particularly to edges due to frame. Some craquelure to bottom left and top middle section, but paint layer is stable. Area of paint cracking to top right corner of board, as shown. Inspection under UV light reveals some minor areas of restoration. Paint loss and minor moulding loss to frame, as shown in photos.

We see the date 1830 several times within this painting, which indicates that this was painted at the time of the French Revolution. We are shown a range of French citizens in varying dress, suggesting that this is the funeral of somebody popular with the people. The dome of the Institut de France is visible beyond, with the French flag flying high.
