Description

A beautiful limited edition etching and aquatint by Valerie Thornton detailing the magnificent interior of Aachen Cathedral in Germany. Currently with several works owned by the Tate Gallery, this particular print is signed, titled and numbered below the plate (39/50). Presented mounted in a gilt-effect frame behind glass. On paper.

Condition

The frame has minor surface wear and scuffs. The print is in very good condition for its age with no marks or discolouration.

Artist Biography

Valerie Thornton (1931-1991) was born in London where she later studied art at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art from 1950-53. In 1954 she went to Paris and studied printmaking with the renowned teacher Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17. Thornton then moved to New York where she spent two years at the Pratt Institute. Her first exhibition of etchings and watercolours was held in 1960. Thornton’s work is to be found in several public collections both in Britain and America.
