A beautiful etching and aquatint by the respected printmaker Valerie Thornton. This detailed representation of a Surrey farm building is typical of Thornton's oeuvre and displays her sensitivity to texture. Her impressive technical skill allows a sculptural depiction of this weathered architecture. Several of her works are owned by the Tate Gallery. This particular piece was probably owned by Sheffield University 'FAS Sheffield Uni.' inscribed verso. Signed, titled and editioned 45/70 in pencil below the plate line. Well presented in a card mount and wood frame. On wove.

Artist Biography

Valerie Thornton (1931-1991) was born in London where she later studied art at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art from 1950-53. In 1954 she went to Paris and studied printmaking with the renowned teacher Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17. Thornton then moved to New York where she spent two years at the Pratt Institute. Her first exhibition of etchings and watercolours was held in 1960. Thornton’s work is to be found in several public collections both in Britain and America.
