This beautiful etching and aquatint by respected artist Valerie Thornton details the hilltop commune of Vézelay in northern France. Currently with several works owned by the Tate Gallery, this particular print is signed and numbered below the plate (14/50). On paper.

Condition

Light dirtying and discolouration to the edges of the paper. The overall condition of the print is very good.

Artist Biography

Valerie Thornton (1931-1991) was born in London where she later studied art at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art from 1950-53. In 1954 she went to Paris and studied printmaking with the renowned teacher Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17. Thornton then moved to New York where she spent two years at the Pratt Institute. Her first exhibition of etchings and watercolours was held in 1960. Thornton’s work is to be found in several public collections both in Britain and America.
