A moody oil of substantial size by the painter Tom Coates (1941) HNEAC RBA RP RWA RWS PPPS. The scene shows a hilltop view over an urban landscape of rows of houses on the outskirts of an industrial town. Although children can be seen playing ball in the street and cycling home, the painting retains an imposing mood, with muted palette and confident line work. The style the artist has employed echoes the harsh, regimented nature of the architecture in the town and the humdrum lives of the people living there. The crisp lines of green hills in the horizon and the un-muddied blues of the sky add hope and respite to the austere town below.
This painting shows clear inspiration from the themes and style of L. S. Lowry who was famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century.
The painting is signed on the reverse. There is also an inscription at the reverse, likely referring to a portrait that had been painted over with the new urban landscape scene. The painting is on canvas laid to stretchers.
On canvas.The painting is in overall good condition. There is an area of black, tar-like substance at the reverse of the top right corner, however, this is not visible from the front and does not affect the overall image.

Tom Coates was born in Birmingham in 1941. He studied at the Bournville College of Art 1956 – 59 and Birmingham College of Art 1959 – 61. In 1961, he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools. Here, he worked under Keeper Sir Henry Rushbury and Professor Peter Greenham, winning many prizes for his oil paintings. Throughout his career, Tom has travelled a great deal. Valuing good draughtsmanship, on his trips to Australia, North Africa, Europe, and America he chooses to draw from life, filling his sketchbooks with scenes. He has now amassed a large library of sketchbooks which he still utilises as points of reference. When Tom was made President of the New English Art Club, they were put on display to be enjoyed by the public. Tom is always accompanied by his specially-designed pochard box which allows him to paint spontaneously whenever he identifies a moment he wishes to capture. Tom loves the work he does. This passion can be found in every painting.
