Thomas Stodhart (1755-1834) - Watercolour The Farewell of Hector and Andromache

Description

A scene from Homer's *Iliad* depicting Hector, the Trojan Commander-in-Chief, meeting his wife Andromache and son Astyanax (who is carried by a nurse) at the city gates before departing for battle. Andromache pleads with her husband not to risk his life, but Hector believes it is his duty to defend Troy. When Hector attempts to embrace his son, the child recoils, "scared at the sight of his father's armour, and at the horse-hair plume that nodded fiercely from his helmet." Signed to the lower left. Well presented in a gilt-effect frame. On paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing. Marks and scuffs to the frame.
