A fine early 19th-century Neoclassical watercolour depicting the myth of Atalanta and Hippomenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The composition shows Hippomenes kneeling in blue robes, holding one of the golden apples as he reaches towards Atalanta, who stands with flowing hair and a basket, grasping another apple. In the myth, Hippomenes used three golden apples gifted by Aphrodite, dropping them one by one to distract the fleet-footed Atalanta during their footrace, thus winning her hand in marriage. The painting is well presented in a 19th-century scrolling acanthus frame. Mounted behind glass. Unsigned. On paper.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some minor discolouration and foxing to the paper. There is light wear and small losses to the corners of the frame. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
