Artist Biography

John Nash (1893-1977) was a British painter renowned for his figure studies, rural landscapes, and Biblical scenes. Born in Walton-on-the-Hill, Surrey, Nash's artistic journey began at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art from 1909 to 1912, where he formed influential friendships with fellow artists Edward Wadsworth, C.R.W. Nevinson, and Stanley Spencer. He continued his artistic education through government art classes in Reading from 1912 to 1913. Nash's personal life was marked by two marriages: first to Mabel Emery in 1914, during which time he shared living quarters with Gilbert Spencer, and later to Frances Gurr in 1929. The following year, he accepted a position as Art Master at Ackworth School, combining his passion for art with education. Throughout his career, Nash exhibited widely at prestigious venues including the New English Art Club, Royal Academy, Goupil Gallery, and notably the Redfern Gallery. His work attracted discerning collectors such as Sir Michael Sadler and Thomas Balston, establishing his reputation in the art world. Nash maintained strong connections to Berkshire, particularly Reading, where he spent significant periods of his life. His artistic legacy was celebrated in a major retrospective at Reading's Museum and Art Gallery in 1979-80, featuring works from renowned institutions including the British Museum, Ashmolean Museum Oxford, and galleries in Manchester, Newcastle, Bournemouth, and Harrogate.
