Thomas Rowden (1842-1926) was a British painter, born in Exeter, Devon. In 1859 he joined the Royal Marines and was moved to Plymouth and served on HMS Conqueror based at Devonport Docks. In 1868 he married and had nine children. Following the death of his first wife, he remarried in 1886 and his second wife gave birth to three children. Apart from his time in the Navy he appears to have spent most of his life in that city and was probably self-taught as an artist. Rowden was fond of painting dogs and cattle and sheep in particular often on Dartmoor. He rarely exhibited showing only twice in 1883 at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin.
