A historical scene from the English Civil War set c.1649 that depicts a Royalist being led away by soldiers, possibly after a hearing with Parliamentarian military leaders. The prisoner bears a stoic expression but continues to resist his captors who pull at the white fabric of his shirt and breeches. The three leaders use a drum as a table, on which the coats of arms of Cromwell's Commonwealth Flag can be seen: the Saint George's Cross of England alongside the gold harp of Ireland, which are also visible at the top of the tent. In this context, the Commonwealth was the political structure from 1649-1660 in which England and Wales, and later Scotland and Ireland, were governed as a republic after the execution of Charles I. Presented in a brushed gilt-effect wooden frame. Signed to the lower-left edge.
The painting has been professionally restored, primarily to the canvas at the centre of the left edge. There are some minor scuffs to the frame. Overall in very good condition.
