Description

This maritime scene depicts a bustling coastal harbour with beached fishing boats and figures engaged in daily activities along the shoreline. The composition balances dramatic dark-hulled boats against a luminous sky, whilst figures and horses populate the foreground, creating a lively narrative of 19th-century maritime commerce and life. Presented in a large gilt effect frame with engraved name plaque naming Shayer as the artist. The artwork is unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The artwork has undergone some historic restoration, with relining and heat treatment it has caused the painting to lose its probable original quality. The canvas is undulated and the texture of the canvas weave is showing through the paint. There is some craquelure to the surface. The frame has some marks and scuffs, with a distressed, vintage finish.
