A truly exquisite portrait of a young man wearing a traditional 17th Century "falling band" (they were made of unstiffened silk or cambric, a fine white linen, it fastened at the neck and draped over the shoulders and could extend down as far as the chest and back. The plain nature of this falling band suggests this young man was a puritan, a strictly religious person against excess in personal display. The style of brushwork and the thicker weave of the original canvas suggests this was a late 18th century Century portrait in the style of the 16th Century master Giorgione (the name Guogioni has been inscribed on the back).
The original canvas has been re-lined although the re-lining canvas also has considerable age.
On canvas.The painting is in remarkably good condition given its age. Inspection under UV light reveals a restored paint loss to the left edge. The painting has been relined and laid to stretchers. The stretchers have signs of woodworm but other than this the canvas and stretchers are in fine condition.
