A charming rural watercolour of farm buildings in the parish of Potton. The artist has signed to the lower left corner and the painting has been presented in a gilt frame with wash-line mount. There is a framer's label at the reverse with the artist's name and location of the painting. On wove.

Potton is a town and civil parish in the Central Bedfordshire district of Bedfordshire, England, about 10 miles east of the county town Bedford.

Artist Biography

Stanley Orchart (1920-2005) was a painter born in Walthamstow, London. He was a landscape artist who worked in watercolours, oils, pen and ink and also made lithographs. Orchart was an engineering student in Leeds and while in that city attended evening classes at Leeds School of Art. Until the late 1950's he worked in the oil industry turning to professional art c.1960. Though often described as working in East Anglia, he also painted in Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire. He was best known for his portrayals of the English countryside in both oils and watercolours. Stanley Orchart lived in Great Staughton, Cambridgeshire and spent most of his life working in Bedfordshire and East Anglia. Examples of his work are held in the collections of Cecil Higgins Art Gallery, Bedford, Luton Culture and St. Albans Museums. His work is frequently reproduced as prints and he usually signed his work with his surname and an abbreviated date.
