Wood was born in Maindee, a suburb of Newport, South Wales the son of a cement manufacturer. He was a hugely popular contributor to magazines in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is chiefly remembered for his depictions of the wild west which graced many a boy's story papers. It was the perfect match of subject and talent as Wood was superb at depicting horses in action. He spent some of his teen years, with his family in Kansas, USA and he returned to America in 1888 when he was sent to South Dakota by the Illustrated London News. His wild-west depictions were reproduced in Boy's Own Paper and Chums. Other works also appeared in Black & White, Cassell's Magazine, The Graphic, The Idler, London Magazine, Pall Mall Magazine, Pearson’s Magazine, Strand Magazine and many others. He also exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Academy of Arts and Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Paintings by Wood are in Gallery Oldham, Maidstone Museum & Bentlif Art Gallery, NAM and the Tank Museum.
