Description

A charming watercolour of a cottage in the village of Newtown Linford, Leicestershire, surrounded by trees and beside a stone wall. Inscribed to the reverse are the location and a note, 'Some time afore Christmas'. Signed to the lower left edge. Location also inscribed to the lower left edge. On watercolour paper laid to board.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing, particularly to the sky. Overall in good condition.

Artist Biography

Blake was a painter and illustrator who was born in Bradford but spent most of his life in Nottingham. As a black and white illustrator, he was a close associate of Tom Browne, a popular English strip cartoonist, painter, and illustrator. Blake is however chiefly known for his topographical watercolours of not only his adopted town, but of many European and North African countries to which he travelled. He showed his work in the Nottingham Castle Museum, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Leicester City Gallery, Northampton Museum and Art Gallery and Derby Art Gallery. He was for many years President of the Nottingham Society of Artists. Nottingham Castle Museum has examples of his work.
