This original c.1826 watercolour by the early 19th Century artist Sophia Stansbury depicts a reclining lady wearing an Empire silhouette dress, with two winged cherubs in a garden setting.
Delightfully presented in a late 19th Century gilt frame with running moulded patterns, and a cream card mount. Signed on the reverse.

In remarkably fine condition for a watercolour of this age. Some light discolouration to the skin areas. The frame has some areas of restoration.

Sophia Stansbury was an early 19th Century watercolourist with a remarkably dynamic approach to form and palette, far ahead of the prevalent styles of the period.
Her highly illustrative naive style, and almost theatrical settings have retained almost all of their colour, owing to exemplary storage conditions for the last two centuries. Her work includes classical studies, portrait scenes, and English landscapes.
