Description

An evocative coastal scene by Scottish artist Sir David Young Cameron (1865-1945). A sailing ship can be seen traversing the turbulent waters in the distance, silhouetted against the mountains beyond. Signed and titled to the lower right. Smartly presented in a black frame. On paper.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age including discolouration to the paper. Wear and scuffs to the frame. Some debris caught under the glass.

Artist Biography

Sir David Young Cameron RA (1865-1945) was a Scottish painter and etcher, mostly of townscapes and landscapes. He was a leading figure in the final decades of the Etching Revival. Cameron trained at evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art and then entered the Royal Institution, Edinburgh in 1885. He exhibited at the New English Art Club in 1892 and became one of Britain's most prolific etchers. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, Royal Watercolour Society, Royal Scottish Academy, and Royal Academy. He was knighted in 1924. He was appointed King's Painter and Limner in Scotland in 1933. During World War I Cameron was an Official War Artist commissioned by the Canadian Government. His work is in the collection of the Imperial War Museum and Tate Gallery, amongst others.
