Sidney Yates Johnson (fl.1890-1926) - Framed 1913 Oil Sunset at Low Tide

Description

A dramatic early 20th century coastal landscape by the highly collected English School painter Sidney Yates Johnson. This is an excellent example of the artist's oeuvre. The scene shows a stretching coastline at low tide, with a blushing sunset illuminating the water and white chalk cliffs. The painting is well presented in a gilt effect frame with swept rails finished with shell and acanthus ornamentation. Signed 'S. Y. Johnson' to the lower right and dated 1913. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including light soiling and discolouration to the varnish layer. Light scuffs/abrasions noted to the perimeter of the canvas as well as light impressions from the reverse canvas bars. Minor wear noted to the top right-hand corner of the frame. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.

Artist Biography

Sidney Yates Johnson was a prolific painter of landscapes in oil who was working from about 1890 until about 1926. His work has a distinctive style and is similar to that of Frank Hider. The subjects are often in pairs and usually Cornish coastal scenes, beach scenes, highland landscapes and cottages in a rural setting. The artist did not often inscribe the work with the location, but it was usually dated, with the signature S. Y. Johnson scratched in the wet paint. He sometimes signed with a monogram.
