A striking and intimate portrait of Stopford-Taylor's close friend, the artist Joyce Bell. The portrait shows Bell sitting in her home in an armchair propped up by cushions, with her cat on her lap. The casual posture and composition show a natural rapport between the artist and sitter. The portrait is filled with pattern and colour, with wonderful attention to the details of the patterns in the folds of the fabric.
The artist has signed and dated to the lower edge and the painting has been presented in a contemporary pine frame with card mount and glazing. There is a label at the reverse with information about the death of Joyce Bell.

Shirley Stopford-Taylor was born in Ripon and attended Harrogate Art School in the early 1950s. She worked as an art teacher in Yeadon and Whitehaven before returning to Harrogate where she began working as a pastel portrait artist. Her career flourished as a portrait artist in the late 70s and early 1980s and she received numerous commissions. She also had many exhibitions including Yorkshire and London galleries.
