An original 1732 engraving entitled 'The South View of Thornbury Castle in the County of Gloucester', with a highly detailed and rare architectural view of the castle in a state of ruinous decay, by the 18th Century English engravers Samuel and Nathaniel Buck.
The full inscription below the picture, but within the plate, reads 'This cannot be so properly called the Remains of a Castle as the Remains of a very magnificent unfinished one, designed by Edward Stafford, Duke of Buckingham, Lord Constable. He began it in 1511 2d, Hen:VIII. as appears by an inscription over the gate but he liv'd not long enough to compleat it being beheaded An. 1521.'.
Well-presented in a mount with gilt detail, and gilt effect frame, as shown.
Signed in the plate. On wove.The condition is very good for a picture of this age, with only light surface dirt and discolouration. The frame has very minor scuffing to the corners.
