Description

A charming watercolour painting with areas of sgraffito by the artist S.G. William Roscoe. The scene depicts a view at Rhaeadr Ewynnol Swallow Falls, in North Wales. Signed and dated to the lower left-hand corner. Artist's name is inscribed on the mount. There is a label on the reverse, inscribed with the artist's name, title and medium. There is a sales invoice from 1984 attached on the reverse. Well-presented in a washline card mount and in a distressed gilt effect frame. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, otherwise in good condition. Some scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

S.G. William Roscoe (1852-1922) was a painter, whose work appears regularly at auction, yet little is known of his background. He studied art under his father, William Williams (1808-1895). Roscoe exhibited at the Newlyn Art Gallery, the Dudley Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, RA, Dowdeswells, MAFA, RBA and RI. An example of his work is in the collection of Torre Abbey Museum.
