Ron Ranson was born in Chesterfield and began his career as a technical illustrator with Rolls Royce, illustrating cars and aero engines. He then spent many years as a designer with the London Advertising Agencies, and for 12 years was Publicity and Public Relations Officer with a major company before taking up painting as a career. Self-taught, he concentrated on watercolour and developed a loose impressionist style, which has much of the simplicity of oriental painting. He had one-person exhibitions in England, Australia and Luxembourg, and his work was shown regularly at the RI and other important London exhibition venues, and was a member of the Bristol Savages. Throughout the years, he ran a residential watercolour school at his home in the Wye Valley with students coming from as far afield as Australia, USA, South Africa and Oman. During the summer he used to lead parties of painters to the Greek Island of Paxos, and to Provence in the South of France. He also travelled all over Britain giving talks and demonstrations to Art Societies.
