Artist Biography
Roger Dérieux (1922-2015) was a French painter born in Paris. He was the only son of Henry Dérieux, a poet and writer. His mother, Isabelle Thomas, was also a writer of tales and short stories; he grew up in a household steeped in literature, music, and art. In May 1941, Dérieux began serious painting work focused on still life and landscape. His father died that October. During the war years, he navigated compulsory labour service and, to avoid the Service du Travail Obligatoire in 1943, he embarked on a period of flight across France. After the war, he attended the Académie Lhote and took evening drawing classes in Paris. In June 1947, he had his first gallery exhibition. Dérieux is associated with the École de Paris. A pivotal moment came when the Danish curator Haavard Rostrup invited him to the exhibition Living Colours in Copenhagen, which assembled leading figures of French painting from Bazaine and Picasso to Braque, Matisse, Soulages, and Nicolas de Staël. After living and working in Paris, Dérieux eventually settled his studio in Pern, in the Lot region of south-west France. From 1950 onward, he held more than fifty solo exhibitions in France and abroad. A retrospective of his work was held at the Henri-Martin Museum in Cahors in 2012.
