Robert William Billings - 19th Century Pen and Ink Drawing Dirleton Castle

Description

Pen and ink with wash, by the well known English painter and architect Robert William Billings (1813-1874), depicting the Octagonal Room in Dirleton Castle. This is an original sketch for his work "The Baronial and Ecclesiastical Antiquities of Scotland" the plates of which were engraved by J. Godfray as G.B.Smith. Sketched on watercolour paper laid down onto backing card. Inscribed.

Condition

Some yellowing, discolouration and foxing present, typical for a picture of this age.

Artist Biography

Robert William Billings (1813 – 14 November 1874) was an English painter and architect. Trained as a topographical draughtsman, he wrote and illustrated many books early in his career, before concentrating on his architectural practice.
