Artist Biography
William Papas (1927-2000) was an illustrator and painter, born in Ermelo, South Africa of German-Greek parentage. After the end of World War II Papas studied art in Johannesburg before travelling to London to complete his studies at St. Martin's School of Art. After returning to South Africa to work as a cartoonist on the Cape Times and other newspapers, he took up farming. However, he soon returned to England and by 1959 was on the staff at the Guardian newspaper working as a political cartoonist. He also contributed cartoons to the Sunday Times and Punch until the beginning of the 1970’s. He was banned from returning to his homeland by the South African government because of his apartheid cartoons.
He then moved to the USA where he syndicated his work to newspapers and journals across North America. He died in British Columbia, Canada as a result of a flying accident. Examples of his work are in the collections of the V&A, NPG and the British Cartoon Archive.
