Artist Biography

Robert Weir Allan RWS (1851-1942) was a painter and etcher. Born in Glasgow, he studied in Paris at the Académie Julian, from 1875 to 1881 and with Alexandre Cabanel, (1823–1889) and the École des Beaux-Arts. He moved to London when he was thirty years old and became a prolific exhibitor showing his paintings at the RA, NEAC, of which he was a founding member, the RBA and in Scotland at the RSA and the RSW. The FAS held an exhibition of his etchings in 1924, and he also produced some mezzotints.

An inveterate traveller, Allan toured Europe and Asia painting often en plein-air and exhibiting many of his foreign works in Great Britain. He is widely represented, particularly with his seascapes and genre paintings, in public collections including the Aberdeen Art Gallery, BMAG, Bury Art Gallery, Ferens Art Gallery, Glasgow Museums, Manchester City Art Gallery, Museums Sheffield, National Museums Liverpool, National Museums Northern Ireland, Nuneaton Art Gallery, University of Aberdeen, V&A, Victoria Art Gallery and Windsor Museum and Art Gallery. Allan was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1887 and later became vice-president from 1908 to 1910. Allan was also a member of the St. Ives Society of Artists.
