Artist Biography
Robert Lee was a painter and constructivist born in Bingley, West Yorkshire. He attended Bradford College of Art, 1932-37 and the Royal College of Art, 1937-40. Although a painter since his early student days, he is best known for his boxed constructions which he began to make in the late 20th century and is regarded as one of the UK’s outstanding artist-craftsmen.
Following active war service he went into teaching first at Hammersmith College of Art and later at Batley School of Art where he became Deputy Head. He taught variously at locations in North Yorkshire and in 1965 showed at the Manor House Museum and Art Gallery, Ilkley. In 1991 he was afforded a retrospective show at Bretton Hall. Several of his constructions were sold at a Scarborough auction house in September 2013 and his paintings are held by Kirklees Museums and Galleries. In 2009 Dean Clough Galleries, Halifax staged a major posthumous retrospective of his work.
