Description

A colourful painting of figures enjoying the waterside on a sunny afternoon. Presented glazed in a white wash line mount with a gold window and a distressed gilt-effect wooden frame. The name of the artist and his dates are inscribed to the lower edge of the mount. Gallery label on the verso which includes the title. There is an authentication stamp on the verso by the artist's daughters. On watercolour paper.

Condition

There is some minor discolouration and some foxing to the mount. There are some scratches, scuffs, and dents to the frame. Overall in good condition.

Artist Biography

Robert Graham Dryden Alexander (1875-1945) was a painter, born in Brentwood, Essex the son of strict Presbyterian parents who rather grudgingly allowed him a year or two to study art before placing him safely in the family business in the City. He studied at the British Museum, the Hornsey School of Art, and later like his daughter Jean Alexander (1911-1994) at the Slade. The majority of his views are of Essex subjects, since he lived in Brentwood and often stayed at Walton-on-the-Naze. A close friend of Sir George Clausen and Mark Fisher, he was a regular exhibitor at the NEAC and the RA. In 1922 he shared an exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery with A. S. Hartrick. His work is represented at the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum, and the Ashmolean. A retrospective exhibition was held at the Anthony Fortescue Galleries, London in 1975.
