Description

An original c.1679 mezzotint by Robert Tompson after Sir Peter Lely, depicting Hortense Mancini, Duchess of Mazarin. The subject of this rather early mezzotint was a niece of Cardinal Mazarin, chief minister of France, and a mistress of Charles II, King of England, Scotland and Ireland. She was the fourth of the five famous Mancini sisters, who, along with two of their female Martinozzi cousins, were known at the court of King Louis XIV of France as the Mazarinettes. Signed in the plate. On watermarked laid.

Condition

In very good condition for a picture of this age. Some light surface discolouration and minor surface dirt to the edges. A good impression.
