Artist Biography
Richard Sorrell (b.1948) is a British painter, the son of artists Alan Sorrell and his wife Elizabeth Sorrell nee Tanner. Sorrell trained at Walthamstow Art School, 1965-66 and then at Kingston College of Art until 1969 and finally at the Royal Academy Schools until 1972 where he was a student of Peter Greenham, Roderic Barrett and Edward Bawden. there he was awarded the RA Schools Silver and Bronze Medals. He Sorrell started his career as a painter of landscape and still life with a few portraits which he did for some 25 years whilst living in London and Norfolk. He also painted from memory and imagination, and made something of a speciality of aerial views, mostly of grand houses, for the National Trust and the owners of stately homes.
For two decades he invented paintings that have come to the fore and in 1975 he was elected to the Royal Watercolour Society, serving as Vice President 2002-2005 and President 2006-2009. An Executive Committee member of the New English Art Club 1995-2006 and again 2009-2010, he is also a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, from where was awarded the De Laslo Medal in 2002. He is also a member of the Art Workers' Guild and the Chelsea Arts Club. A governor of the Mall Galleries 2000-2006, he has exhibited at Leicester Galleries, Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions since 1971; Royal Watercolour Society Exhibitions since 1975; Royal Society of British Artists since 1985; New English Art Club since 1995 and the Small Pictures Group since 2000 and has had many solo and mixed exhibitions. He now lives in Cornwall and works by him are in the Beecroft Art Gallery, ACGB. V&A, Norwich City Council and the Museum of London.
