Description
The English Civil War proved an appealing subject for nineteenth-century history painters, offering not only dramatic narrative potential but also vibrant, distinctive costumes. As the artist James Ward observed in 1824, "there is variety of colour, stuffs, Leathers, armour, Beards, strong Horses, and other good matters." Such variety is amply demonstrated here, where the artist depicts a cavalier resplendent in a colourful uniform with a frilled white collar and cuffs, and a large feathered hat. The hilt of his sword gleams in the dim light, while smoke from his pipe diffuses gently into the air. The work is signed "Reno" to the lower right, and is beautifully presented in a highly ornate gilt frame with scrolled floral mouldings. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and craquelure. Areas of overpainting. Extensive cracking to the frame ornamentation, resulting in several losses, alongside general wear, scuffing, and tarnishing to the surface.
