Rene Georges Hermann-Paul (1864-1940) was a French artist born in Paris. In his early career he worked as a lithographer for publications such as La Faridondaine, Le Courrier Français and many more. He used his work to criticise all aspects of French society, creating humorous depictions of people from all walks of life.
Being in his fifties during the First World War, he was not drafted but used the time and his artistic skills to document war. The war caused restricted access to the metal that he usually used to create prints, so it was around this time that he started experimenting with woodcuts. His first major series in wood was "The Four Seasons of Culture", a series of five woodcuts that depicted atrocities committed by the Germans in Belgium.
After the war he continued to work predominantly with woodcuts but also produced fine art prints and book illustrations.
