Description

A charming nineteenth-century oil after Rembrandt's (1606–1669) 1645 'Girl at a Window'. Leaning on a stone ledge, the girl wears a white blouse, her curls tucked under a small cap. Her identity remains uncertain; in the past she has been described as a courtesan, a Jewish bride, and as a historical or Biblical figure. It is more widely accepted that she is a servant girl. The original is in the collection of the Dulwich Picture Gallery. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and areas of craquelure. Scratches and abrasions to the surface. The canvas has been previously relined. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
