Description
A fine copy after Spanish artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682). Although Murillo is best known for his religious paintings, here he turns his attention to the poverty he saw in his native Seville. As a member of charitable organisations such as the Franciscan Third Order and the Seville Brotherhood of Charity, the sight of a destitute child stuffing food into his mouth, as is depicted here, must have been very familiar to him. Well presented in a swept gilt-effect frame. Unsigned. On metal.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration. Areas of overpainting. Scratches to the surface. Wear to the frame. Loss to the lower edge. The upper left corner has been restored.
