Description

A fine copy after Spanish artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682). Although Murillo is best known for his religious paintings, here he turns his attention to the poverty he saw in his native Seville. As a member of charitable organisations such as the Franciscan Third Order and the Seville Brotherhood of Charity, the sight of a destitute child stuffing food into his mouth, as is depicted here, must have been very familiar to him. Well presented in a swept gilt-effect frame. Unsigned. On metal.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration. Areas of overpainting. Scratches to the surface. Wear to the frame. Loss to the lower edge. The upper left corner has been restored.

Size

19 x 16cm (7.5" x 6.3")
