Reinhard Schmidt - Framed Early 20th Century Oil Workhorse in Harness

Description

A chestnut working horse stands in harness, head lowered, its weight settled in that heavy stillness of an animal at rest between tasks. The handling is loose and confident, with warm browns and ochres carrying through from the horse into the roughly brushed ground behind, while flashes of white on the fetlocks lift the otherwise muted palette. Presented in a simple gilt-effect frame. Signed lower right, with handwritten provenance notes on the reverse. On canvas.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous restoration. The canvas has been previously relined and the painting revarnished. There is a small loss of paint to the horse's rear right hoof. The frame has light surface wear and scuffs. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
