Description

A tragic scene depicting a sailor finding a drowned woman on a beach. She is tied with rope to a wooden mast and likely died a captive in a shipwreck. The painting follows in the tradition of George Frederic Watts 'Found Drowned' (c.1850) and anticipates works such as John Everett Millais's 'The Martyr of Solway' (1871). Presented glazed in a white mount and a distressed gilt frame. Initialled and dated to the lower-left corner. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is a small closed tear to the upper-left edge and faint creases to the left edge and lower-left corner. There are some scuffs, cracks, and areas of restoration to the frame.
