R. Paul - Original 1909 Watercolour. Inscribed and dated. In fine condition. From a collection of fine landscape watercolours by R. Paul, produced from the late 19th to early 20th century. Nearly all are signed or monogrammed and dated, and some are inscribed with place names. Dates range from 1862 (an early architectural drawing) to the latest at 1927. R. Paul depicted many inland and coastal landscapes around Britain, including Scottish Highland lochs, anglers and cattle; views in Devon, from Dartmoor to the coast; Yorkshire rivers; and Northumberland castles. The artist has an eye for landscape compositions and for capturing water and skies. His views give an insight into the landscapes of rural Britain at the turn of the twentieth century. Many of the paintings have newspaper or map paper adhered to the back of the watercolour paper, often dating from the same date as inscribed on the painting. Presumably this was the artist’s way of strengthening or stretching the watercolour paper.
