A landscape view at Eling near the New Forest. Presented in a beige mount and a wooden frame. Monogrammed to the lower-right corner. Label verso, inscribed with the title. On watercolour paper.

Condition

There is some mild foxing and discolouration and some slight scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

Frederick Mager (1882-1961) was a painter who worked as a civil engineer in the Federated Malay States for a decade from 1917. He studied with Romilly Fedden in France, 1924-5, at Southampton School of Art, 1927-31, under Percival Moore, then with Bertram Nicholls, 1935-7. He began exhibiting in the late-1930s, signing work F M, at RSA, ROI, NEAC, RA, and Paris Salon. He was elected UA in 1949. In 1945 Mager presented five watercolours to Southampton, several of which recorded wartime there; they are now in the possession of the City Museums. On his death Mager left all the books from his studio to Southampton.
