A very fine original mid 19th Century watercolour by the artist R.F. Hiddle, depicting a rather busy panoramic view of the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. The artist has included many recognisable landmarks in this wide aspect of the World Heritage City, including Santa Maria della Salute, St Mark's Campanile, and San Giorgio Maggiore to the right.
The artist's vivid natural palette has survived remarkably well, and the style of the figures and vessels is typical for work of this medium and period. Meticulous and carefully placed layered brushwork is indicative of an artist who is familiar with both form and subject, and the subtle lighting adds a sense of calm to the overall composition.
Handsomely presented in a pierced gilt wooden frame with scrolling acanthus mouldings and beading, as shown.
Signed. On wove.In remarkably good condition for a picture of this age. There is only some minor even surface discolouration to the sky area. The frame has a small loss to the moulding on the lower edge, but is in very good condition overall, with light scuffing to the corners.
