A very fine 1881 French oil on canvas by the artist Pigale, depicting an 18th Century scene with two figures in dress of the period, on a bench beside a lake. The figures appear to be members of the French nobility, with elaborate dress and jewellery. The gentleman has a characterful and foppish manner, while the lady appears flustered and affected by his words. The romantic scene is set within a picturesque setting, and the artist has employed meticulous brushwork with fine details.
Well-presented in a swept gilt wooden frame, with acanthus scrolling and ornate corner ornamentation. Signed and dated '81 to the lower right corner, as shown.
Signed and dated. On canvas on stretchers.In very good condition for a picture of this age. There are three previous canvas repairs, seen to the reverse, which have been professionally restored. Some slight surface discolouration, and a very small pinhole in the canvas near the centre. Even craqueluree. The frame is in fine condition.
