Artist Biography

Piet Lippens (1890-1981) was a lesser-known Belgian painter. He left for New York at the age of seventeen and worked there for some time. During his military service, he learned to draw and paint in his spare time at the Academy in Tournai. He then went back to the USA, this time to Chicago. After the First World War, he took lessons for a few months at the Academy in Ghent. His early works were often melancholic and bleak in subject, featuring factories, slums, barracks, prisons, and shipyards. Although he maintained his Impressionist style, his compositions would become more colourful as he got older.
