A fine 20th Century Impressionist style street scene showing an Italian square on a hot Summer's day, with street vendors selling their wares under umbrellas. The artist has signed to the lower right corner and the painting has been presented in a 20th Century frame with wide linen cove. On board.

Some minor discolouration to the varnish. In otherwise fine condition.

Artist Biography

Phyllis May Morgans RGI (1911-2001) was a painter from Enfield, Middlesex. Phyllis studied at St. Martin's School of Art where her principal subject was fashion design but later turned to painting, initially portraiture and illustration. As an exhibitor she showed at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and was made an Honorary Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers.

Phyllis painted mainly in oils and sold many of her paintings at Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds. She exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and held a considerable number of solo shows. Many of her works have been reproduced, several in the 'Laing' calendars. She lived and worked at The Green, Walberswick, Suffolk from 1971 and departed for Spain in 1989 but she died at Ipswich in 2001.

Her work is well represented in both private and public collections, including that of the Hitchin Museum and Art Gallery and Norris Museum, St. Ives, Cambridgeshire and the Library of Congress, Washington D.C. Her daughter Helen M. Morgans (b. 1937) is a Colchester based artist.
