Artist Biography
Kalman Kemeny was born in Budapest and served as the youngest official war artist with the Austro-Hungarian Army on the Italian and Eastern Fronts between 1915 and 1917. His memoirs can be found in the Imperial War Museum. After the First World War, he settled in Pilsen with his wife and daughter. After the German annexation of the Sudetenland in 1938, he and his family emigrated to London. In London he joined the Ben Uri Art Club where he exhibited. He also regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. His work included landscapes, still life and portraits, his sitters including Quentin Crisp and Hamilton Kerr (MP). He turned to sculpture and ceramics later in life as his eyesight deteriorated. His daughter Lydia Kemeny was Head of Fashion and Textiles at St Martin's College of Art.
