Philip William Cole (1884-1964) was an artist and stained glass designer who was born in St Leonards-on-Sea and studied at Hastings School of Art. To gain further experience, he moved to Manchester where he worked as a designer for a large fabrics firm and also trained as a silversmith. He returned to the capital continuing his studies at King’s College London and, ultimately, at the Royal College of Art, 1909-13. Cole returned to Hastings in 1914 holding the position of second master at his former art school although his early years were interrupted by war service.
He produced paintings in watercolour and oil and his work in metals was of a high enough standard to be presented to Montgomery and Churchill when they were given the freedom of Hastings. Cole showed at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists and Paris Salon and stained glass windows by him can be seen in Sussex churches at East Dean, Burwash and Northiam. Several examples of his paintings are in the collection of Hastings Museum and Art Gallery and he was a member of the Art Workers' Guild.
